The first batch of reusable pallets with radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags has entered the construction supply chain. The Pallet Loop, in collaboration with its manufacturing partner Scott Pallets, has successfully shipped over 30,000 Loop pallets to British Gypsum’s bagged plaster plants at Barrow, East Leake, and Kirkby Thore.
The Pallet Loop's initiative marks a significant advancement in reducing waste and promoting reuse within the construction industry. The introduction of RFID-tagged reusable pallets enables precise tracking and efficient management throughout the supply chain. These pallets are now being processed through British Gypsum’s plants, with the initial batches already arriving at construction projects, building sites, merchant yards, and distribution centers across the country.
The operational model of The Pallet Loop has evolved since previous attempts to launch the program. Initially based on a deposit-return scheme, the model has been simplified. Registered return partners will now receive £4 per pallet for every returned pallet, ensuring they are reintroduced into the supply chain. This change aims to streamline the return process and encourage wider participation, making it easier for companies to contribute to the circular economy.
The deployment of these reusable pallets is expected to have a substantial positive impact on the environment. By reducing the reliance on single-use pallets, the initiative helps decrease the volume of waste generated by the construction industry. The RFID technology also enhances the efficiency of pallet management, reducing the need for additional resources and lowering the carbon footprint associated with pallet production and disposal.
