The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) has launched an ambitious new competition at InnoTrans 2024 in Berlin to drive innovation in the global rail industry. Partnering with InnovateUK and the Department for Business and Trade in the UK Government, GCRE’s “Contracts for Innovation: International Rail Innovation Challenges” competition provides £500k in funding to stimulate solutions to key rail challenges worldwide. This competition aims to attract international teams ready to address critical rail industry needs, from resilient construction methods to the decarbonisation of materials like concrete.
The competition focuses on solving pressing issues within the rail sector, including the development of construction methods that enhance the resilience of rail networks and initiatives for decarbonising concrete used in rail infrastructure. By inviting solutions to these themes, GCRE hopes to foster ideas that will make rail infrastructure stronger, more sustainable, and adaptable to future demands.
The competition’s global emphasis requires teams to partner with international collaborators, encouraging a cross-border exchange of ideas and expertise. This international approach not only broadens the scope of solutions but also aligns with the global nature of rail industry challenges. Collaborative projects are expected to bring fresh perspectives, leveraging diverse technological advances from around the world.
